Overview

This PSCAD study models a droop-based grid-forming three-phase voltage-source inverter and compares grid-following and grid-forming control under weak-grid conditions.

It connects converter modeling with power-system questions: how the control structure interacts with the surrounding grid, and how the inverter responds when grid strength is reduced.

My work

  • Modeled a droop-based grid-forming voltage-source inverter in PSCAD.
  • Simulated and compared grid-following and grid-forming control for weak-grid conditions.

Methods & diagrams

01

Grid-following case

The grid-following model provides one side of the control comparison.

02

Droop-based grid-forming case

The grid-forming implementation supplies the contrasting converter-control structure documented in the CV.

03

Weak-grid comparison

The two approaches are compared in PSCAD under reduced grid strength. Numerical settings and exported results can be added when the source cases are available.

Findings

  • The modeled control comparison provides a foundation for further converter-grid interaction studies.

Scope & limitations

This is a simulation study of grid-following and droop-based grid-forming control under weak-grid conditions. Hardware validation and grid-code compliance testing are outside the documented scope.

The cover illustrates the topic; it is not a PSCAD model or a measured response.
